SFO summer job, Communications Consultant vacancy

The Communications Consultant increases Streetside's visibility and supports resource generation through marketing, communications, and publications. The Communications Consultant will have a passion for arts education, literacy, and youth development, and excellent project management, interpersonal, writing and communication skills. The Communications Consultant should enjoy working both independently and on a team in a fun, fast-paced, flexible environment.

This is a one-year, contract position with the possibility of renewal. It will begin as soon as possible, and end on June 30, 2012.

Streetside Stories is a nonprofit arts education organization. Through the power of storytelling, Streetside Stories cultivates young people's voices to develop literacy and arts skills, fosters educational equity, values diversity, and builds community. Last year, Streetside's programs served over 2,500 youth and teachers. 70% of the students Streetside Stories serves are low-income, 95% are people of color, with many immigrant youth for whom English is a second language. The Communications Consultant must be present in Streetside's office to fulfill responsibilities listed below. A limited amount of work may be done remotely.

Responsibilities Include:

Writing, Marketing, and Public Relations:
• Work with website designer to develop and update website content
• Draft advocacy alerts on short notice due to time sensitivity
• Draft press releases, talking points, media alerts, and other materials
• Coordinate media requests with appropriate staff and board spokespeople
• Cultivate and manage press and media opportunities
• Pitch news stories to reporters, producers, and editors

Collateral Development
• Manage the Streetside brand and effectively maintain brand identity
• Write and manage production of publications or communications materials, including but not limited to bi-annual appeal letters and an annual report
• Proofread and copy edit documents
• Coordinate and manage the development and production of communications materials related to Streetside events

Online Communications and Social Networking
• Develop and implement effective strategies to reach target audiences through online campaigns
• Manage all online activities, including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, and Causes

Project Management:
• Management and editing of bi-monthly e-newsletter
• Production of Streetside's anthology, a 200+ page paperback book of youth poems, essays, and artwork
• Dissemination of student work via various online outlets

Planning
• In conjunction with the Development Director, design and implement annual communications plan that meets Streetside's strategic goals
• Develop and implement media strategy and tactics
• Development of staff and board guidebook for messaging
• Provide staff, board, and volunteers with talking points for media
• Create and maintain Communications Manual

Collaboration
• Work with Development Director on items listed above
• Work collaboratively with the Communications Associate and Fundraising Associate on some of the items listed above. The Communications Consultant will be the project lead on items listed above, with two Associates available for support.

Other writing, including grantwriting, as needed.


Required Skills:
• Impeccable writing and editing skills
• Excellent project and time management skills
• 3-4 years combination of marketing, public relations, and professional writing experience, ideally in the nonprofit sector
• Proven history of successfully engaging an audience through social media, especially Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter
• Ability to work independently and cooperatively
• Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills
• Basic knowledge of issues relevant to Streetside's work, including K-12 public education, youth development, arts education, and literacy
• Strong commitment to the mission and goals of Streetside Stories

Preferred Qualifications:
• BA or equivalent, preferably in marketing or communications
• Professional copy editing experience
• Experience with publications
• Basic HTML and website knowledge

Salary
$24.00 per hour.
Up to 375 hours of work from August 1, 2011 -- June 30, 2012, at an average of 8 hours of work per week. Possibility of contract renewal after June 2012.
