Cognella/University Readers, Inc. is recruiting enthusiastic, hard-working, and dedicated freelance Final Readers to complete assignments from home. In this role, you will make sure that our textbooks are consistently formatted and error-free.
Candidates with publishing experience, exemplary proofreading skills, and attention to detail are strongly encouraged to apply.


Description of Duties

1.  Receive book interior files (InDesign .indd files), and original source material in PDF or Word format.
2.  Read all book text for accuracy and consistency; this includes checking for misplaced words, incorrect characters, missing words/pages, and other inconsistencies or typos.
3.  Compare book interior layout against source files for accuracy as needed.
4.  Ensure all house style preferences are correctly applied throughout the text, working through supplied Layout Checklist.
5.  No line-editing or copyediting is involved.
6.  Typical assignment turn-around is 5--7 days, dependent upon book length. Due dates are given at the time of project assignment.

8.  InDesign CS 5 is required for this work. We are currently unable to work with CS 5.5 files.
9.  Familiarity with formatting and paragraph/character styles in InDesign is essential.
10.  A reliable Internet connection and e-mail access for communication and file transfers.
11.  Ability to proofread with accuracy.
12.  Ability to meet deadlines and communicate in a timely manner.
13.  Must be regularly available for assignments May through December.
14.  Must be comfortable working objectively with a wide range of academic topics, including some sensitive or potentially offensive content.

Candidates with qualifying scores will be asked to complete a second brief test to demonstrate basic familiarity with InDesign features and functionality. After successful test performances, we may extend a (1099) freelance consulting offer and add you to our trial pool.

A signed Consultant Agreement will be required.


Pay Scale
Final Read assignments are paid a flat fee based on project page count and available budget. Each fee is arranged at the time of initial work assignment. In rare cases, the rate may adjusted to reflect difficult assignments that require extra skills or effort.
